Attaque sur notre dirigeant
h1]Madrid, 1936
Important breaking news reports have emerged from the north-east of Madrid, where a dastardly and unprovoked terrorist attack against Spanish prime minister José María Gil-Robles y Quiñones was carried out yesterday! The Prime Minister's train was headed north to tour Catalonia, where important new armaments for the Isabella-class battleship are under construction, as well as to see various new industrial plants. While traversing a bridge, the train was rocked by an explosion, and a sudden and devious ambush was carried out by unknown rebels, attacking with machine guns, rifles, and grenades. These rebel troops, according to government reports, came close to overwhelming the train, before an emergency patrol of Gendarmes managed to see the perfidious attackers off, saving the prime minister, who had been wounded in the incident. The attackers fled into disarray into the countryside, with some of their equipment being captured, as well as 3 men being taken prisoner - all either Basques or Catalans according to current reports, although interrogation of them is continuing. Gendarme, police, and army forces are roaming the region to attempt to find traces of the escaped criminals, while the injured of the attack have been rushed off to medical care. The bridge, partially destroyed, appears to have had a bomb planted on it, which went off while the train was crossing. Thankfully, the bomb's fuze was not correctly set, so only the rear part of the train was destroyed, although a second bomb succeeded in destroying the track in front of the train and hence had trapped it.
José María Gil-Robles y Quiñones, shocked and deeply affected by the event, has temporarily withdrawn from the public view. Spanish papers have all been appropriately concerned about the health of the prime minister after such an odious attack, and have fully supported all activities to track down and to bring to justice those who carried out this villainous and terrible assault upon Spanish civilization and the Spanish government. Patriotic citizens have taken to the airwaves and written letters of support fully supporting all government actions to restore order and bring these traitors to justice. In the only report directly from the Prime Minister, José María Gil-Robles y Quiñones declared that he was "Overwhelmed with the joy of seeing the national fatherland united in a patriotic outpouring of support, as all Spaniards from the Pyrenees to Cadiz, from rich to poor, have joined together in the defense of the fatherland in danger", followed by his thanks for the numerous gifts and well wishers which had bent sent to him or tried to see him. Doctors have announced that his wounds, apparently inflicted by the shock of the bomb and by being grazed by a bullet, will soon heal, and the Prime Minister will be fit to return to duty.
Indeed, government action has been remarkably swift
almost as if this was planned....
, and in response the Spanish government has given the SDS, or the Social Documentation Service, the Spanish secret police, unprecedented powers to hunt these criminals, with intensified censorship, examination of letters and communication,. Martial law has been declared in the Basque and Catalan regions, with police on the streets, and the army deployed to patrol and to root out anti-Spanish, separatist elements, who played such an odious role in this attack. Separatist political parties in Catalonia and the Basque countries have been banned entirely. Communist parties have fallen under intense suspicion, especially following the revelation that several of the guns which were used in this most odious attack were of American manufacture, doubtless smuggled in by radical anarchists and anti-government agents.
Elections planned for later this year have of course been cancelled, and will not be held for the duration of the emergency. In this time of crisis, it is vital that all patriotic Spaniards stand behind their government, instead of being wrought up in petty partisan squabbles. Doubtless, at a date which is soon to come, these elections will be re-authorized, but for now, all energy of the fatherland must be devoted to peace, order, progress, and security! Doubtless this crisis will soon pass with a resounding rooting out of anti-government agents and an appropriate purge of those sectors of society from whence they have hailed.
