Outlawing Basque and Catalan

Unity is the word which must stand as part of the national pantheon of patriotism which every Spaniard must guard in their soul, and it must be on the lips of every son of Spain. Unity, for without its sacred touch the nation, the fatherland, risks to founder upon the rocks of chaos, unity, which guides the spirit of Spain, unity, which casts out the enemies of civilization and which purifies the guiding light of our liberties and the justice of our social order. A nation united is one built on solid foundations: a nation divided against itself cannot stand. Spain must be like the great nations of Europe - Germany, England, France, Italy - who, despite their quarrels, have proudly cemented the precious ties of nationhood, to not render the national people into divided groups, even when they fight for what they view as the truth of the national polity.

For in Spain, it is clearly not the case that the wise example of this policy has been followed. Instead, we are confronted with the chaos of those who openly broadcast their wish to move against the Spanish order - who every day, simply in the words they speak, broadcast and signal their allegiance not to the greater Spanish polity, but instead to the chaos, the disloyalty, even, if the word must be uttered with daring, treason. To who is this directed? Towards Catalonia and the Basque country, who speak their regional patois instead of the Spanish language.

It must be admitted that calling Catalan, if not Basque, a patois is perhaps excessive, for it has been proven that Catalan is capable of producing some vaguely technically capable works. But to speak Catalan is to isolate oneself from the broader Spanish politic. The Spanish language is spoken from the Pyrenees to the Rio Grande, from Cape Horn to Morocco, an important language of international communication. To speak this provincial language, compared perhaps to something like Czech at most in its importance, is to cut oneself off from the great movements of international import, to hide in provincial isolation. Fundamentally, Catalan is essentially a debased an inferior version of Spanish, with no place in the modern world. To speak Basque, a bizarre and archaic creole, is to hide in the past, to hide in provincial, anti-Spanish, bigotry, to be against the greatness of Spain and against the Spanish nation.

The early Republic, quite clearly, in its degenerate ways, offered autonomy and recognition to regional languages. This policy must end. The Spanish (also known as and used interchangeably with the word "Castilian) language is to be declared the only official language of Spain. A variety of measures are to be put into effect, listed as followed.

The usage of non-Castilian names for children is to be forbidden, except for foreigners.
All films are to be produced in Spanish and foreign films dubbed.
Languages other than Spanish are to be confined to the public sphere.
Any education in languages other than Spanish is to be suppressed.
Mass in any language other than Spanish is to be ceased.
No language other than Spanish is to be permitted in education.
Commercial agreements and documents will only be valid in Spanish.
No public publication in languages other than Spanish.
Publication of books and works in languages other than Spanish is to be ended.
No radio broadcasting is to be carried out in languages other than Spanish.
Cultural associations devoted to the promotion of regional languages are to be closed.
Usage of other languages in education is to be severely punished by teachers, with the participation of students in denouncing them.
Tombstones and other inscriptions will not be allowed to bear regional languages.
No scientific usage of regional languages is to be permitted, and all scientific publications will be in Spanish.

In addition all tentatives at autonomy in any region of Spain are to be repressed. Spain will be a unity republic, not one open to the dangers of federalism. Disloyal, anti-government elements, including police after a thorough review of the regional law and order forces, will be deprived of their weapon and purged from government service. Clergy who refuse to obey the commands to only speak Spanish will be removed from their position and replaced by Spanish speakers, and sent to monasteries (assured of their political loyalty and their appropriate political leanings by the Social Documentation Service) in Castilian Spain, to be spiritually re-educated. According to the SDS, there is a certain degree of collusion between the Church in the Basque Country and anti-Spanish elements, which must cease. Fortunately, the central administration of the Church in Spain is in full accord on this point, and will cooperate with us completely in conducting a thorough house-cleaning of preachers and priests at the local level who are operating in clear illegal breaches of Spanish law. The autonomy which the church in the Basque country has up until now enjoyed is in clear breach of the traditions of the Spanish church in Spain, and will correspondingly be reduced.
